Asian Pop

A decade later his second feature Undoing is finally hitting theaters. Chris Chan Lee sounds like he s had better mornings. The only downside was that way too many drinks were being handed to me. Ten years ago we world premiered my first film Yellow here at the Kabuki he says. It s a neat little full circle thing. Instead the Lees opened a corner market at Potrero and th Street. I worked there growing up says Lee. Every weekend every summer I worked for my dad at the store just like the lead character in Yellow. Man working for your parents they re the hardest bosses in the world. I had to plead with him not to remembers Lee. I mean we had a concrete floor. I could see things going very badly. But even as admiring notices piled up offers for work didn t. I had a lot of meetings at studios says Lee. I met a few really supportive people but as for getting any flat out offers No. So that s as far as it went. They ll probably have robots flipping the bur! gers. It seemed like a really great opportunity get paid to work overseas doing what I wanted to do. It was exciting living overseas getting paid to direct it was a pretty good thing at a time. But yeah it totally was like leaving one bubble and moving into another. I felt like I d missed a page you can t help but feel a degree of alienation. Abrams forthcoming film in the Star Trek franchise. By there was more of a critical mass out there the climate was just so different. But the bottom line is that Justin made a really strong film. He got where he is based on his talent period. By the same token BLT added a blackly comic twist to the equation bending genres undoing expectations once more. And that in turn made it safe for well Undoing. And noir is perfect for visualizing that. In some ways it s the ideal vehicle for an Asian American movie. It s also the ideal vehicle to explore the nature of inexplicable connections broken circuits and unexpected recursions! . the other New York featuring a main character torn between opportun ism and the desire to make things right. You could draw a complex map of all the connection points between Asian American films he says. There s no way to avoid that. I m writing he says.
