An eighth grade soccer player was shot and wounded during a game at a middle school Thursday around the same time that gunfire was reported at an elementary school about a mile away. Authorities did not know whether the shootings were related but were searching for a suspect in the soccer player s shooting said Omaha police spokeswoman Darci Tierney. Several people were detained in the elementary school shooting. King Science and Technology Magnet School was briefly locked down after the player was shot. No arrests had been made Tierney said and it was not immediately clear where the shots came from or how many were fired. No one was believed to be injured at the elem! entary school. About kids were in and around the middle school about p..m. when witnesses saw the boy a soccer player on the sidelines bleeding from his face. He had been shot in the mouth and was taken to Creighton University Medical Center police identified him as year old Taylor Borgeson. Children were kept in the school as police questioned them. Dozens of parents picked up their children after the lockdown was lifted. It s kind of a hectic scene Tierney said. Steven Bryant parent of a fifth grader who attends the school was on his way home from a job site when he saw a fire truck ambulance and police cars around the school and thought the worst. I just thought don t let it be a mass thing Bryant said. It s just your worst fear. In December police responded to a shooting spree at an Omaha shopping mall. Eight people were fatally shot and three wounded before year old gunman Robert Hawkins took his own life. Luanne Nelson spokeswoman for the Omaha Public School District said counselors will be available to students Friday. Parents in the cit! y s largest district were already on edge after threats this week at Westside High School. Officials there said that written threats were found in a school bathroom and that the windows had been shot out of more than a dozen students cars. A lawyer for the Marcoses said that of the c! ases filed by the government against the family since cases remained. The rest have been dismissed. Meet my new journal

Before anything else I d like to show you a part of my offline life. Here s what I do when I am not online eat help in the house hold chores for hours from washing the dishes to cleaning the comfort room mopping the floor etc. read and review telebabad textathon haha write in my journal watch TV DVDs play the guitar while singing layout designing Boring isn t it Hehe So anyways last Monday after I applied for a job in Makati I went to Glorietta and ate lunch with TJ my boyfriend in case you don t know yet at McDonald s. I tried the new cheeseburger deluxe. Seriously I really didn t like it. Yeah it s delicious but nothing beats the original cheeseburger Burger Burger Burger Haha So after we ate lunch we just strolled around and looked for a nice gift for my dad. But you know what happened I ended up buying a new journal for myself. Haha I love notebooks. I buy different kinds of notebooks and journals. I am just so into cute notebook ish stuffs. I either write on them make t! hem a scrapbook or just leave them unwritten. It s one of my weaknesses you know. Haha Let me show you what I bought last Monday It s a simple journal and I totally fell inlove with it. The cover is made of suede that made it look elegant despite the simplicity. So when we were about to leave the mall I saw this school supplies shop and decided to go inside to buy an exclusive pen for my journal. Arte noh Haha I went to look for a nice pen and while looking for it I saw this cute scratch pad. I know that I can use it in my hobby layout designing. When I design layouts I first draw my plans in a scratch paper used bond papers. I thought of buying a scratch pad to be more organized. At first I was hesitant of buying it so I kept on returning it to and getting it from the rack. Haha. But I heard someone singing behind me Kung ano ang nasa puso mo sundin mo. LOL. That s the effect of having a crazy boyfriend. Hahaha So yeah I bought it with my chosen pen. D Here s the scratch p! ad that I bought. I know that you ve seen this already in some stores. I also included here the sample of my layout planning and conceptualizing. There you go. That s what I do when I am offline. I know that it may be boring for you but that s what I enjoy doing. The plan was working to perfection. Two months past his th birthday Jamiel Shaw Jr. had stayed out of gangs was a solid student and standout athlete. An ultra quick running back who led his high school s football team to a Southern League title he was attracting scholarship attention from Stanford Rutgers and other schools. Two gunshots ended the plan and Jamiel Jr. s life. I thought everything that I was doing was going to keep him from this his father said choking back tears. The boy was shot Sunday night on a sidewalk just a few doors from home close enough for Jamiel Sr. to hear the gunfire. He ran outside and found his mortally wounded son in a pool of blood. Several Los Angeles neighborhoods are exper! iencing a spate of gang violence. In the last two weeks police engaged in a gunbattle with a carload of alleged gang members after a man was shot as he walked with a child eight people five of them children were wounded when a man fired into a crowd near a bus stop and a year old boy was shot in the head and critically wounded while riding in a car with his family. What s particularly unnerving for all of us is the random nature of these shootings Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said Wednesday noting that a cloak of fear has spread across parts of the city. Police Chief William Bratton acknowledged the spike in gang crime and said he s responding the same way he did in the last time there was such violence. He s putting cops on the dots meaning flooding crime hot spots with officers. Villaraigosa is calling for the hiring of at least more officers in the next two years to push the department total to . Los Angeles has recorded homicides this year a percent increase from the same time last year. Still Bratton said overall crime is down as are gang r! elated homicides from last year to so far this year. That statistic doesn t mean much to Jamiel Jr. s friends and relatives who remembered him as a happy friendly teen. He always used to have a smile on his face said Colletti Scorza who was Jamiel s track and field training partner. Jamiel s mother Army Sgt. Anita Shaw was on her second tour in Iraq and flew home to bury her son. Jamiel who was black was killed by Hispanic gang members who asked him what gang he belonged to then shot him when he didn t answer police and witnesses said. No arrests have been made. The year old boy shot in his family s car also is black. Two men both Hispanic have been arrested. Witnesses said the assailants flashed gang signs before opening fire. Bratton described the area where the year old was shot as under the influence of a Latino gang but rejected the idea that the recent violence is racially motivated. He said hate crimes would be prosecuted if evidence suggests race was a component. Bu! t he bristled at a news conference Wednesday when asked if recent shootings were indicative of wider racial problems. There are several unfortunately among you who every time we have one of these incidents want to make more out of it than it is Bratton said. Hispanics constitute about half of Los Angeles nearly million residents. As the population has surged Latinos have moved into traditionally black neighborhoods sometimes creating tension. Joe Hicks vice president of Community Advocates Inc. and former executive director of the city s Human Relations Commission said race is one part of the complex gang problem. There seems to be some reticence to talk about what is taking place Hicks said. There certainly appears to be a racialized component. Jamiel Shaw Sr. doesn t think race was a factor in his son s death noting the boy had many Hispanic friends some of them on the Los Angeles High School football team. At a candlelight vigil attended by about friends family members and neighbors the grieving father pleaded for an end to the violence. We! are so occupied with this black and brown crap that nobody is dealing with the gangs he said. We don t have no problem with black and brown. It highlighted cases in which individuals were inappropriately restrained with straps or a chemical cosh denied treatment because of their learning disabil! ity or even assaulted. And it said that their experiences in health and care settings reflected a wider culture in which people with learning disabilities were denied their fundamental human rights in breach of clear Government policy. The report from Parliament s Joint Committee on Human Rights called for a culture change to bring the provision of services of adults with learning disabilities in line with the aspirations of the Government s Human Rights Act and the Duty to Promote Disability Equality. The committee said it was particularly concerned that even after the introduction of these measures the Government was still searching for levers to encourage authorities to implement the requirement to ensure dignity and respect for all. The report found that adults with learning disabilities had little confidence in the criminal justice system and were more likely to suffer miscarriages of justice and less likely to qualify for early release. Children of parents with learni! ng disabilities were more likely to be taken into care even though human rights legislation requires authorities to protect their right to a family life unless it means a child is put at risk. But the report s most scathing findings were reserved for the experience of people with learning difficulties at the hands of those on whom they are most reliant for care and support. The committee cited five recent publications detailing abusive neglectful or discriminatory practice in health and residential care settings including Healthcare Commission reports in and which uncovered institutional abuse at Cornwall Partnership NHS Trust and Sutton and Merton Primary Care Trust in south London. In another case a man with Down s syndrome was locked in a minibus overnight and had his foot broken by day centre staff. Another man died aged after developing serious health conditions while spending days in an NHS psychiatric assessment unit without the appropriate staff to support him. Like Hindus they were far more numerous than their more aggressive warlike invading rulers. Before the th Century China was dominated by Manchu Tartars and Mongol Tartars from the Northeast and Northwest the Manchus forcing humiliation upon Chinese men by compelling shaved heads wit! h pigtails. Similar Tartar hordes ruled Russia for centuries and Stalin himself according to his biographer might have felt Russia buffered Europe from the Tartars. Chinese nationalism arose only in the th Century first under the Christian influence of Sun Yatsen and his brother in law Chiang Kaishek later under the atheism of Mao Zedong and his admiring friends most recently Deng Xiaoping and successors. Socialism with Chinese characteristics is the slogan of the present Communist Party but a more realistic slogan of what Mao and friends came to represent in their last decades may be Chinese nationalism with socialist characteristics . Taiwan and to lesser extent Singapore and Hong Kong represent Chinese nationalism with capitalist characteristics . Western observers keen always to know the safety of their Chinese investments have focused on China s economics whether the regime is capitalist or socialist and to what extent Indians and other Asians may be keener to identify and indeed help the Chinese themselves to identify better the evolving! nature of Chinese nationalism and the healthy or unhealthy courses this may now take. Just as Czarist and Soviet Russia attempted Russification in Finland the Baltics Poland Ukraine etc. Imperial and Maoist China attempted Sinification in Manchuria and Inner Mongolia as well as Tibet and Xinjiang Sinkiang East Turkestan . Russification succeeded partially but backfired in general. Similarly Sinification succeeded naturally in Manchuria and without much difficulty in Inner Mongolia. But it has backfired and backfired very badly in Tibet and Xinjiang and may be expected to do so always. In India our soft state and indolent corrupt apparatus of political parties constitute nothing like the organized aggressive war machine that China has tried to make of its state apparatus and we have much more freedom of all sorts. India does not prohibit or control peasant farmers or agricultural labourers from migrating to or visiting large metropolitan cities villagers are as free as anyo! ne else to clog up all city life in India with the occasional political rally in fact India probably may not even know how to ban suppress or repress most of the things Communist China does. Hindu traditions were such that as long as you did not preach sedition against the king you could believe anything including saying like the Carvaka that hedonism and materialism were good spiritualism was bunkum and the priestly class were a bunch of crooks and idiots. Muslim and British rulers in India were not too different yes the Muslims did convert millions by offering the old choice of death or conversion to vanquished people and there were evil rulers among them but also great and tolerant ones like Zainulabidin of Kashmir and Akbar who followed his example. India s basic political ethos has remained that unless you preach sedition you can basically say or believe anything no matter how irrational and also pretty much do whatever you please without being bothered too much by government officials. Pakistan s attempts to impose Urdu on Bengali speake! rs led to civil war and secession North India s attempts to impose Hindi on the South led to some language riots and then the three language formula Hindi spreading across India through Bollywood movies instead. China proudly says it is not as if there are no declared non Communists living freely in Beijing Shanghai etc pointing out distinguished individual academics and other professionals including government ministers who are liberals social democrats or even Kuomintang Nationalists. There are tiny state approved non Communist political parties in China some of whose members even may be in positions of influence. It is just that such token parties must accept the monopoly and dictatorship of the Communists and are not entitled to take state power. The only religion you are freely allowed to indulge in is the ideology of the State as that comes to be defined or mis defined at any time by the Communist Party s rather sclerotic leadership processes. Chinese passports During! China s Civil War the Communists apparently had promised Tibet and Xinjiang a federation of republics Mao later reneged on this and introduced his notion of autonomous regions provinces and districts. The current crisis in Tibet reveals that the notion of autonomy has been a complete farce. Instead of condemning the Dalai Lama and repressing his followers a modern self confident China can so easily resolve matters by allowing a Dalai Lama political party to function freely and responsibly first perhaps just for Lhasa s municipal elections and gradually in all of Tibet. Such a party and the Tibet Communist Party would be adequate for a two party system to arise. The Dalai Lama and other Tibetan exiles also have a natural right to be issued Chinese passports enabling them to return to Tibet and their right to return is surely as strong as that of any Han or Hui who have been induced to migrate to Tibet from Mainland China. Such could be the very simple model of genuine autonomy for Tibet and Xinjiang whose native people clearly do not wish to b! e assimilated in the same way as Inner Mongolia and Manchuria. India s federal examples including the three language formula may be helpful. Once Mainland China successfully allows genuine autonomy and free societies to arise in Tibet and Xinjiang the road to reconciliation with Taiwan would also have been opened.
